Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
